                                                  Jaipur Kawa Brass Band

The Jaipur Kawa Brass Band hails from the colorful, vibrant, and majestic desert state of Rajasthan, the original land of gypsies. The band is a spectacular showcase of North Indian gypsy heritage, featuring seven authentic Indian brass musicians. Their performances include awe-inspiring illusions by a fakir and the captivating choreography of a kalbelia (snake charmer), who dances like a cobra, representing spiritual truth.

Leadership and Origin

Hameed Khan Kawa, a renowned tabla player and artistic director of the popular groups Musafir and Kawa Musical Circus, founded the Jaipur Kawa Brass Band. Coming from a musical lineage and having taught music at a local university in Rajasthan, Hameed was deeply influenced by the brass bands of his childhood. His experiences in France, where he played fusion tabla and was exposed to classical Hindustani music, traditional Indian and Western music, and jazz, inspired him to blend these styles and create a brass band of his own.

In 1995, Hameed gathered talented musicians from different parts of Rajasthan, forming the Jaipur Kawa Brass Band. The band plays a wide repertoire ranging from Indian traditional music with its distinctive gypsy sound to popular Bollywood songs, all infused with the sophisticated structures of North Indian classical music. Their melodies and songs are developed with much refinement, showcasing virtuoso solos and dazzling improvisations.
